Bullies As Neighbours

Neighbour Bullying

There are thousands of people suffering the effect of a neighbour from hell either living next door or in their region. In the ACT, Australia, the police attend more than 200 jobs a week related to this crime. That in a city of only some 350,000 and one can only imagine what the bigger cities are facing.

It was a huge shock when one moved into the house next door to me. After a short time when she seemed to want to get along she suddenly started verbally abusing, tossing over my garbage cans in the street, jumping the fence and stealing tools and vegetables from my yard and hurling bricks at my roof during the early hours of the morning. The explosion of large fireworks beside the fence outside my bedroom window at 2 or 3 am sent me hurtling out of bed thinking something in the house had been the cause.

Perhaps it all started with her dogs. The two small animals barked all night long and it was impossible to sleep. Repeated requests for them to be kept quite eventually saw one given away but the other kept up the noise. It got worse when he decided to dig under the fence and present himself at my back door on numerous occasions. Taking him back and pleading for better control of the animal did nothing and eventually I resorted to leaving a note in her letter box after which the real horror began.

The Trigger

One day soon after the police contacted me and in an interview passed on some information about her. The 3 children had been taken into care after she severely injured them in a violent attack that had caused the neighbours to ring them for help.

That may have been the trigger for worst behaviour but who knows. She had lost her licence previously for drunk driving and the family were known for drug addiction and supply.

The Problem

It is not possible to catch bullies of this nature during such attacks. They are cunning and hide their intentions while being active during the night or when the victim is out. Verbal abuse must be recorded and evidence by way of photos or videos is required by a court. This can involve setting up security cameras around the home and not everyone has the money or know-how to do that.
